Therapy for Children with ADHD to Help Them Flourish

Kids with ADHD work hard all day to keep up, stay focused, manage big feelings, follow directions, and finish tasks that look simple from the outside, but require so much cognitive effort on the inside. When handwriting, homework, transitions, morning routines, organization, and emotional regulation feel hard, home and school life start to feel stressful for everyone.

You’ve tried timers, charts, reminders, rewards, movement breaks, and every tip you’ve found on the internet. Some strategies help for a day or two, but the same patterns keep showing up. Your child feels frustrated, you feel worn out, and daily routines start requiring more energy than they should.

In occupational therapy, we help children with ADHD build skills around focus, regulation, handwriting, organization, and independence. Every session is thoughtfully designed around your child’s strengths, interests, and goals–so they feel successful, supported, and excited to keep growing.

What Is Occupational Therapy for ADHD?

Occupational therapy (OT) helps children with ADHD strengthen the skills they need to participate more successfully at home, at school, and in everyday routines. OT, specifically for kids with ADHD, supports:

  • Emotional regulation - building tools to manage frustration, big feelings, and transitions with more confidence

  • Attention and executive functioning – supporting focus, task initiation, planning, organization, flexibility, and follow-through

  • Fine motor and handwriting skills – improving hand strength, pencil control, writing endurance, spacing, sizing, and legibility

  • Visual-motor integration – strengthening how the eyes, hands, and body work together for writing, copying, drawing, and school tasks

  • Daily living routines – supporting independence with dressing, organizing materials, following multi-step directions, and managing everyday responsibilities

Occupational Therapy fOR ADHD: FAQs

How does occupational therapy help children with ADHD?

Occupational therapy for ADHD helps children build the skills they need in the classroom and at home, such as focus, regulation, handwriting, organization, routines, and independence.

Does occupational therapy help with ADHD and emotional regulation?

Yes. OT helps children recognize what their bodies need, practice regulation strategies, and build routines that support calmer transitions, fewer shutdowns, and more successful participation.

Does OT help children with ADHD improve handwriting?

Yes. Many children with ADHD struggle with handwriting because writing requires multiple components of attention, fine motor control, visual-motor skills, planning, and endurance. OT helps strengthen those underlying skills so writing feels more manageable.

What age range do you work with?

We primarily support children ages 5 to 12, though younger or older children are considered based on need.

Do you accept insurance?

ColorfullyEnthused LLC is a private-pay practice, and superbills are available for families who plan to request reimbursement. Parents should contact their insurance company directly to confirm their out-of-network benefits and coverage details.

How long are treatment plans?

Most treatment plans include 24–28 weekly sessions. Formal progress reports with data specific to the child’s measurable goals are provided every 6-8 sessions.
